Searching for information that will confirm that Joseph ACKLEY, Jr., is the father of Joseph Warren ACKLEY. Joseph, Jr., was born 28 October 1777 Haddam, CT, son of Joseph ACKLEY and Hannah ARCHER. They came to Reading, Windsor Co., VT, shortly after that and Joseph, Sr., was involved in early land deals in Plymouth, VT. In 1799, Joseph, Sr., deeded 90 acres to son Joseph, Jr., the land was located in Granville, NY. Joseph, Jr., is recorded in both Granville, NY, and in Pawlet, VT, in different years. ADAMS
I am trying to find information on my g-g-g-grandmother Melissa ADAMS. Melissa married Edward K. HOMAN and he had possibly come from Ireland. She is listed as the mother of George A. HOMAN who was born in Stillwater, NY, in February 1850 and he died in Saratoga Springs, NY, on 18 October 1918. On George's death certificate Melissa is listed as his mother and her birthplace is given as Washington Co., NY. I'm guessing she was born sometime between 1825-1834. Any information appreciated. Seeking more detailed information on my MCMILLIN and ADAMS ancestors of Washington Co., NY. My 3rd great-grandparents were Andrew MCMILLIN and Margaret ADAMS. Andrew was born at Mt. Hebron, Washington Co., NY, in 1803 and died c1873. He married c1831 Margaret ADAMS, born 1811 and died c1873. They had children: Nathaniel (my g-g-grandfather); Samuel; Mary Jane; Abraham; Benjamin; Betsy, married William Scott HANNA; William; Martha; Unise; James; Margaret; and an unknown child. Andrew MCMILLIN's father was born Londonderry, Ireland, 1773 and died 1856 Washington Co., NY. He married Anna, last name may have been QUA, born 1773 Washington Co., NY. They had children: William McClellan; Nathaniel, married Euphemia JOHNSON; Andrew; and 2 other unknown children. In a letter from Alida HANNA of West Hebron, 1896, she mentioned that on the way to Salem she stopped by the cemetery where Grandpa and Grandma MCMILLIN were buried. I have not located their graves. It is also a family rumor that Margaret ADAMS is related to the Presidents ADAMS. Some related cousins may be HURD, HANNA, GETTY and TAYLOR. My great-great-grandfather Squire ALLEN was born 30 March 1815 Rochester, NY. He later lived in WI and MO where he died in 1892. I am seeking information about his father Alexander ALLEN who was born in 1772. Family tradition says that he was born in upstate NY, possibly Washington Co., and that he is of the family of Ethan ALLEN. It's also possible he was born in CT or VT. I am interested in the ARMSTRONG family of Washington Co., NY. Robert ARMSTRONG came to Washington Co. with Dr. Thomas CLARK. HIs children were: Maj. Thomas, Capt. John, James and Robert, Jr., and daughters Margaret QUA (wife of Robert QUA) and Jane TURNER (wife of Alexander TURNER). I am interested in finding the children of all the children of Robert ARMSTRONG. Thru pension records I have found that John, Jr., was the son of Capt. John ARMSTRONG and in James' will, a nephew Samuel is mentioned. There is also a John A. ARMSTRONG. Searching for information on the AUSTIN family of Cambridge, NY. In the 1850 census, James AUSTIN, age 42 farmer, wife Ruth AUSTIN, age 41, Peter AUSTIN, age 17 day laborer, Jacob DODDS, age 38 laborer (Is he related?), and Margaret DODDS, age 37. The 1865 census lists Peter AUSTIN's wife as Eliza M., age 33, born in Washington Co. Their son George W. AUSTIN is a great grandfather. Need any info prior to Peter. BAKER
I am researching Isaac BAKER who apparently resided in Washington Co., NY, in 1806 and had a son named Isaac BAKER. The senior Isaac was born before 1775 and his wife Margaret was also born before 1775. They had children: Ananias, born 1793, possibly in Ira, Rutland Co., VT; Maria, born c1800; Philander, born c1802; Philemore, born c1803; Isaac, born 1806 at Wood Creek, near Fort Ann (my ancestor); and Hiram, born c1808. The Isaac, Sr., family moved to Tioga Co., PA, about 1808. It seems this family was on the move and hard to pin down. Issac doesn't appear in Washington Co. land records. The only hint I have so far are references in Washington Co. histories. There was a William BAKER (Fall River, MA) and a Sarah BAKER (Rehoboth, MA) and my Isaac, Jr. had 6 children and named the 2 youngest William and Sarah. There are other Isaac BAKERS buried in Fort Ann, are they related to my Isaac, Sr? In Quarry Rd. cemetery is Isaac V. Baker, born 28 April 1813, died 27 September 1894 and married Laura COMSTOCK. There are many other BAKERS and COMSTOCKS buried here. Also in Quarry Rd. cemetery is Isaac BAKER, born 20 August 1799, son of Deacon Reuben and Lydia; Lydia BAKER, born 1765, died 11 September 1812, wife of Deacon Reuben; Rheuben BAKER, born 9 November 1784 and died 2 December 1866, married Lois C.; and Lois C. BEARD
My great-grandfather was David BEARD who lived in Hebron in the late 1800s. I have a letter to him in which the writer refers to his purchasing a business. The letter was posted 26 April 1879 and the writer stated that she had recently seen in the Washington Co. Post a notice of David BEARD purchasing a business. I would expect the article to be in the January, February, March or April 1879 issue. Does anyone have access to this old paper? Is it on microfilm and available for loan? BEECHER, SPENCER
Thomas BEECHER married Emma SPENCER and had twin sons born in Fort Ann on 28 August 1823. They were named Andrew and Levi Thomas BEECHER. The boys were orphaned at age 10 and were brought up by an Aunt Sarah. Andrew BEECHER married Lovisa, last name unknown, and had 5 children: John; Frank; Charles; Emma; and 1 unknown child. Daughter Emma married George, last name unknown, and lived in Glens Falls and Albany. Levi Thomas BEECHER left Fort Ann for MI and married Caroline M. GIDLEY. Levi died 6 September 1883. They had 10 children. I am interested in finding more information on the family, especially info about Emma SPENCER and her husband Thomas BEECHER whose father supposedly came to this country with Burgoyne's Army. BERRY
Researching the family of Jonathan BERRY (1771-1849), my 4th great-grandfather. Also interested in uncles Fortunatus, Zachariah and Zara BERRY. All, except possibly Fortunatus, moved to Borodino/Spafford, Onondaga Co., NY, after 1803. Capt. Fortunatus BERRY, Jonathan's nephew, was an early settler in the Lead Region of southwest WI in 1826. He was involved in the Blackhawk War in 1832. The History of the Town of Spafford describes Cambridge, NY, as "the home of the BERRY family." It says Jonathan left there in March 1803 to settle in the Borodino area, others to follow. Jonathan became a major real estate speculator in that part of Onondaga Co. I wonder if he was also involved in such activity in the Cambridge area? Jonathan's wife, Thankful MILLS (1777-1847) was the daughter of Timothy MILLS (1746-1818) and Sophia MILLS (1745-1823), also from Cambridge, NY. Thankful BERRY, Jonathan's wife, is listed in the 1800 census in Washington Co., NY. Looking for information on FISH and BLACKMER families. My grandfather was Robert Benton FISH, born 10 December 1918 Fort Edward, NY. His parents were Jonathan FISH and Bertha HILL. My grandfather was a twin and his brother was Ralph. Robert had a sister Florence, born 1914 Fort Edward and married a JOHNSON. My grandfather married Ruth TILLOTSON. TILLOTSON was an adoptive name and her maiden name was BLACKMER so I am told. My grandfather supposedly had numerous siblings that I do not know about. Any information would be a great help. Anna BROWN, born 7 September 1774, married Solomon KELSEY, who farmed at Butternuts, Edmeston, Otsego Co., NY. They were a Quaker family and had 12 children. Anna and Solomon died prematurely in 1814. Anna's parents are "officially" listed as Asa BROWN and Sarah MOON of Queensbury, Washington Co., NY. But our great-great-grandfather, Asa KELSEY, wrote that his grandmother Anna BROWN was a sister of Gen. Does anyone have any information on William COON, born 3 May 1798 Washington Co., NY? He removed to Scriba, NY, when he was 14 years old and appears to have lived his life there. Seeking information on John COREY. There was a John COREY in Washington Co., NY, in the early 1800s who appears to be a different man than the one who died in Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1820s. My earliest confirmed COREY ancestor is George COREY. He supposedly married Catherine BURGESS before 1800 and they had children John and Polly. A family note says that George died in the 1813 battle of Sacketts Harbor. His widow remarried to a GOODFELLOW before 1820 and died in Fayetteville, NY, in 1832. George COREY'S son John married Eve BRITTEN in Onondaga Co., NY. One note indicates that John COREY of Washington Co., NY, may have been related to the family of Seth CHASE by marriage and that John's widow may have sold land to a BURGESS. Calvin CRAWFORD was born 18 October 1770 Oakham, MA, and was son of John and Rachel (HENDERSON) CRAWFORD. Calvin is listed in the US census in Washington Co., NY, in 1810, living in Granville and in the 1820 census living in Hebron. Calvin married Catherine "Kate" BRUCE in Oakham, MA, in 1792. Calvin CRAWFORD became a member of the church in Middle Granville in 1814 and is mentioned as a member of the militia company that was ordered to Whitehall at the time of the Battle of Plattsburgh. His next child was born at Pownal, VT; the next in Hoosac Falls, NY; and finally all the reset in Cambridge, Washington Co., NY. He is on the census first in 1800 in Rensselaer Co., NY, and the household included his father John Field DA LEE and his mother Maria WATERMAN. DUBOIS
I have looked at many Washington and Saratoga Co., NY, church records on LDS films but can't find the marriage of Henry DUBOIS to Sarah VANDENBERG which took place c1836-37. I can't find the birth/baptisms of their children: Peter James, born c1837; Jane Ann, born 1839; Sylvester Melvin, born 1841; Jacob Vandenberg, born 1845; William H., born 1847; and Frances L., born 1848. All were supposedly born in Washington Co., NY. Henry DUBOIS, his wife, and their first two children are on the 1840 census living in Easton, NY, in the same place where Henry's father Peter DUBOIS lived. Little Francis died and I found her buried in the old Salem graveyard. It seems strange that this family came from 2 well-known family lines in Saratoga and Washington Counties and I can't find any records for Henry DUBOIS, his wife and children. Heinrich HIER married Prudence SEELEY in Washington Co., NY, c1782. He was reported to be a Hessian soldier who stayed here. Their daughter Ruth HIER was born in September 1782 and son Shubael was born in 1784. Ruth later married Paul PRATT from Salem, Washington Co., NY. I am interested in the HIER ancestry. On the road from Granville to Comstock, near the Granville Cemetery across the street, is a small Episcopal church called All Saints Chapel. Does anyone know the history of this chapel? When was it built and by whom? We were told by the rector of Trinity Granville that the chapel was built by one of the Lord and Taylor department store families in order to have a gin-mill closed since it was too close to her home. LEWIS received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. LEWIS died of wounds on September 27, 1878, near Fort Wallace, KS, and his body was escorted to Sandy Hill, Washington Co., NY, for burial. He had a brother Louis C. LEWIS. She was born 12 February 1808, believed to be the daughter of Haile (Hale) MASON or the granddaughter of Samson (Sampson) MASON of Fort Ann, NY. The 1820 census states daughters of appropriate age in both households. The name EDY (E-D-E) figures into this family somehow. Hebron, Washington Co., NY, in 1803 and died c1873. He married c1831 Margaret ADAMS, born 1811 and died c1873. Andrew MCMILLIN's father was born Londonderry, Ireland, 1773 and died 1856 Washington Co., NY. He married Anna, last name may have been QUA, born 1773 Washington Co., NY. They had children: William McClellan; Nathaniel, married Euphemia JOHNSON; Andrew; and 2 other unknown children. In a letter from Alida HANNA of West Hebron, 1896, she mentioned that on the way to Salem she stopped by the cemetery where Grandpa and Grandma MCMILLIN were buried. I have not located their graves. It is also a family rumor that Margaret ADAMS is related to the Presidents ADAMS. Some related cousins may be HURD, HANNA, GETTY and TAYLOR. I have traced my MCMULLAN family to Rensselaer Co., NY, in 1790, going back to Daniel MCMULLAN. His son, Daniel MCMULLAN Jr., was born in Washington Co., NY, in 1815. This family moved to western NY and purchased land in Wayne Co., NY, in the mid-1840s and they have lived there ever since. MEADER
Searching for the ancestry of Daniel MEADER, Sr., born 1779 somewhere in New England--NH, VT, RI. He was married to Rebecca White CARLTON (mother: Mary EDWARDS, father: Amos CARLTON) in 1801 in her hometown of Bradford, MA. After her death in 1816, Daniel married 2d Sally SUMNER in 1817. Severl of the MEADER-CARLTON children were born in VT. After marrying Sally SUMNER and having several more children, the family moved c1820-24 into Essex Co., NY, near Schroon Lake/Ticonderoga, where the last 2 children were born. In 1832, the family moved west again, this time to Chautauqua Co., NY, where the spelling of the last name was changed to MEEDER. Daniel MEEDER died 20 June 1857. Sally SUMNER MEEDER died 29 April 1880 and is buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, Pomfret, NY. Were these MEADERS/MEEDERS related to the Washington Co. MEADER family? (Query posted 8/25/97) Loren R. Am interested in any MELHINCH in Washington Co., NY, in the 1700s. In December 1791, Thomas MELHINCH was a trustee of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Hebron. Andrew MELHINCH married in 1851 in Sandy Hill. Thomas' brother George was supposedly married to a Sarah ARMSTRONG in Washington Co. and had children. Adam MILLER was baptised in Greene Co., NY in 1796. Adam married Bachabea PETTIS in 1820 Washington Co., NY. Bachabea was the daughter of William and Ruth (CRANDALL) PETTIS, of Washington Co., NY. I have been looking for information on Adam MILLER for over 20 years and just located an old MILLER family Bible that gave me his parents names. MINNICH
I am looking for information, especially the availability of a death certificate, on my maternal grandfather Lewis MINNICH, born 1869 PA, died 18 November 1908 Argyle, NY. This info, plus some of what follows, is from cemetery records provided by Allan WILLIAMS, N. Maple St., Granville, NY. Lewis is buried in Mettowee Cemetery, Granville, with his wife, Elizabeth M. JONES (1879-1902) and his in-laws, Robert E. JONES (1853-1912) and Elizabeth E. LEWIS (1853-1913), all of Granville. His son Lewis (1897-4 February 1927) died in Poultney, VT, buried in Granville with his wife Ella M. REED (1899-1967) and daughter Caroline E. (died 1921 aged 7 months). Searching for information on the father of Orson MITCHELL, born in Granvilletown in 1851. His father was I.D. MITCHELL as listed in the 1860 census of Ft. Ann, born 1815 NY. MORELL
William MORELL appears in the 1800 census in Washington Co., NY (p. 527). I am unable to tell what town this was. I don't find him in the 1790 or 1810 census. Lyman MORELL is supposed to have been born in NY in 1799 and this is the "only" MORELL I have been able to find! Can anyone help pinpoint where in Washington Co. he lived? John MORELL appears in the 1810 Washington Co. census (p. 395). Is this the same area of the county as William MORELL lived in when listed in the 1800 census? There is no John MORELL in the 1820 census but there are other MORELLS in Oneida, Otsego, Genesee and Chenango Counties. Did a group go from Washington Co. to any of those areas? Looking for information on Sherman BABCOCK who married Electa/Delecta RICH and had several children born in Westfield, now Fort Ann, NY. The children born in Ft. Ann were Thomas, born 1791; Amanda, born 1789 or 1792; twins Barnis and Bernice (sexes unknown), born 24 February 1794; Youngs, born 1795; Lee, born c1796; Hiram R., born 1798; Stephen, born 1801; James R., born 1803, who married Rachel MULKINS, daughter of Henry MULKINS. The remaining BABCOCK children were born in Panton Twp., Addison Co., VT: Saloma, born 1806; Rowland, born 5 March 1809; Elesta, born 24 February 1811/12; Pardon A., born 28 February 1815. Henry MULKINS, who was married to Rachel [??] was born c1770 in VT or possibly Washington Co., NY, before the the state boundary dispute was settled. Wife Rachel was born c1775 MA and they had children Williard, Henry, Norman, Isaac, Harriett and Rachel, all born in OH on the way to Harrison Co., IN. Sherman BABCOCK also shows up on Harrison Co., IN, and Willard MULKINS married Elesta BABCOCK. I'm interested in any information in these families--photos, death dates, any details.
