Other surnames in query: COX, COLLINS, MURPHY

I am researching the KELLEY/KELLY, COX, COLLINS, and MURPHY families in Washington Co., NY. My father, John KELLEY was born in Washington Co. in the town of Glens Falls, next door to Hudson Falls. His grandfather, John William MURPHY was one of the early sheriffs in Sandy Hill before it became Hudson Falls. My grandmother, Anna Rose MURPHY was born in the jail in 1883. Her older siblings were born in Salem. My grandfather was James Andrew KELLY, who changed the family spelling of KELLY to KELLEY because of the abundance of the first spelling. He worked in the paper mill in Hudson Falls. My great aunt Elizabeth Eugenis MURPHY (born 14 January 1896 and died June 1892) was a well known area music teacher for both voice and piano inthe Hudson Falls area. I am looking for Jeremiah KING. I believe he was born in Washington Co., NY, and later moved to Warren Co., NY. I would like to trace his roots. Perhaps of first American (native) origin? He may have been bound out to another family as a child. He had at least six brothers and from my great aunt's family tree, all six of them went to the Civil War. All returned. Other surnames in query: BELL

The 1830 Census for Fort Ann, Washington Co, NY, has a Ralph BELL who could be my great-great-great-grandfather (1796-1847). His supposed wife Charlotte was born about 1803 in Canada, and I am suspicious that they were both from Quebec and changed their marital surname from something similar like BELLE or LABELLE. (Query posted 9/30/99) John Auten

All of the LABOMBARD/LABOMBARDE families came from Canada to the Clinton Co., NY, area and then settled in Washington Co., NY. David married Elizabeth GATES, daughter of Nathaniel, December 17, 1755 in Sharon, CT. Did the LAMBS and GATES come from CT? If so where? Other surnames in query: WHITE, HENDRICK, HOWE, HERVEY

We are just beginning our search for these families in Washington Co. On July 15, 1840, Eliza Jane LAMOY was born to Thomas and Jane (WHITE) in Whitehall, Washington Co., NY. On 4 April 1858, Eliza Jane married John Hervey HENDRICK (born 25 April 1816). John and Eliza and family left for MN. On 22 January 1869, John died (we believe in Albert Lea, MN). Because of the Hervey middle name, we believe that John was also born in Washington Co or at least related to the HERVEY'S of Washington Co. On 5 February 1876, Eliza married Albert Cyrus HOWE in Albert Lea, MN. Albert was born in Plattsburg in 1821. After his mother died he worked thru out the VT - NY area. It appears that family ties to the Sandy Hill, Washington Co. is strong. Albert's obit lists Eliza as from Sandy Hill and at least 1 of his sons married a woman from Sandy Hill. We are looking for someone to share information and research goals with. (Query posted 3/3/99) Erroll Cross

Other surnames in query: FRENCH, GATES, TICE

For some time I've been trying to help a friend resolve a genealogical riddle regarding his Washington County connections. Fact: William FRENCH Jr. born1822, Pittsfield, MA, married Elizabeth "Betsey" LANGWORTHY, born 1824. They were married 1847 in Easton, New York, according to a newspaper item. Her full name and birth date are engraved on her gravestone in Bennington, VT. She was his second wife. Elizabeth's widow's pension application in the 1880s (discontinued when she died during the process), based upon his Civil War service, included a statement from one Philander GATES who said his sister Laura GATES had been the first wife of William FRENCH. Elizabeth (LANGWORTHY) FRENCH's death record names her parents as Sanford and Abby (__) LANGWORTHY. In 1840, seven years before Elizabeth married William FRENCH in Easton, the census lists a Sandford LANGWORTHY as residing in Easton. He is probably listed as "Danford" LANGWORTHY on p.506 Washington Co. 1810: 21010-21001. A family group chart on the LDS site for him doesn't match this enumeration and states he was born in 1786, which is impossible as his children are shown as: Seth c1812 (listed first, out of order); Sanford born 1802 (died 1862; married Eliza __); Ira born 1804; Phineas born 1806; Chester born 1808; Harmon born 1810; Jason born 1812; Robert born 1814; Lucy born 1816; __ dtr born 1818; (and evidently Elizabeth born 1824). This Sanford LANGWORTHY who was born c.1770, based upon that census enumerations and the dates of his children found on a Family Group Record. No daughter Elizabeth is listed on the chart; however, there is little question he was her father. The 1810 census also shows a son c1797 and a daughter c1799. The same LANGWORTHY genealogy does list an Elizabeth / Betsey born in 1824 as the son of John LANGWORTHY who moved from Washington Co. to Erie Co. That Elizabeth is said to have married Elisha TICE. No one of that name appears in any index to NY census records, and the LDS site has nothing for him at all. For a while I thought perhaps this was an error in the genealogy, or that perhaps Elizabeth LANGWORTHY married twice as did William FRENCH Sr.; however, as the newspaper notice of their marriage styles her "Betsey" LANGWORTHY, not "Betsey TICE," I have changed my opinion. What I need is the estate records for Sanford/Sandford LANGWORTHY of Easton who died in 1840, according to the questionable group chart. The younger Sanford LANGWORTHY born 1802 married Eliza __ and died in 1862, age 60, and is buried in Washington Co. He definitely was NOT the father of Betsey LANGWORTHY born 1824. Is there anyone who can obtain a copy of the older Sanford LANGWORTHY'S estate record without an exact date of death, only the 1840-1850 frame? (Query posted 5/21/99) Jayne Pratt-Lovelace

I have an article, (obituary), written by one of my 3rd great-grandfather's sons, (Kelly Marquis MILLER), in 1891. Here is the first part of it: "The late Marquis D. MILLER was born on the NY shore of Lake Champlain on Aug. 23, 1810, and with his parents, moved to Onondaga Co, NY, in which county he lived until he reached manhood." I am trying to find out where he was born. At first, I concentrated on Clinton and Essex Co., but after writing many letters to their Town Historians, I am now hopeful that he was born in Washington Co. He was a cooper and a farmer and could read and write. Since he didn't marry until he had removed to Illinois, in 1835, and I don't know his parent's names.....it has been frustrating. Perhaps the minister, William MILLER, had a son named Marcus D. (?) Is there any way to find out? Also, I found a Dennis MILLER from Greenwich, who died in 1810, but can't locate any other information. If any of these names are in your records, please email me? I am so desperate, that I have made a notebook of all the NY Censuses from 1800-1850, of only MILLERS. (I've been able to help a lot of NY MILLER searchers). My understanding is, Marcus D.'s parents stayed in NY. Marcus named his first son, George W. MILLER, and had a cousin who also moved to IL, Hiram MILLER, whose father was said to be born in VT. Richard H. PUFFER appears in the index of the 1830 census for Washington Co., Fort Ann, p. 329. I have been unable to view the census itself. It would be nice to see what it shows because by the time he shows up in OH, he is old enough to have children leave the nest. The 1850 census shows him as born 1791-92, and a family genealogy (not footnoted, unfortunately) says he was born in Jamaica, VT on 31 Octover 1791. I am interested in learning what records might shed light on his stay in Washington Co., NY, and how long he was there. Three of his children are shown in 1850 as born in NY -- one in 1816-17; another 1822-23; and the last, 1829-30. Two of those children were married in OH in 1839. He was a shoemaker by trade. His wife, Clarissa, was born in CT and they were married by 1816. I do not know where. The man said to be his father, Amos Puffer, died in 1832 in VT, so wills would be of little help unless Clarissa's father or mother named her and died in Washington Co. County histories rarely mention transients because copies were sold to local residents. Any information on the PUFFER family would be greatly appreciated. (Query posted 6/14/99) A. Sharp
